A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Annegret Affolderbach, Designer & Founder of CHOOLIPS. Annegret is a fashion entrepreneur with wide-reaching vision. She moved from East Germany to London in 1994. After completing her degree in Fine Arts at Middlesex University, Annegret worked in all areas of the fashion world, from pop styling and theatre costume design to cutting patterns for top high street brands, developing holographic textiles and dream experiences for Coca Cola.

CHOOLIPS revamps ancient textiles traditions with the aim to revive these and to sustain the artisans and entrepreneurs behind them. CHOOLIPS’ ‘Golden Coast’ collection works with Batik traditions local to Ghana by the Gold Coast in West Africa. CHOOLIPS’ textiles & dresses are designed in their London Studio but entirely made in Ghana by a community of entrepreneurial grassroots trailblazers of local batikers, tailors and seamstresses, all of whom earn more than fair* wages for their work. CHOOLIPS has introduced new technology & trend-setting print design to sustain this ancient Batik technique. Introducing new stamp materials and Laser technology to Ghanaian producers has pioneered new local design processes and working methods. Today CHOOLIPS’ innovative collections empower developing communities and flourish equitable Trade for grassroots businesses.

CHOOLIPS’ ‘Golden Coast’ collections dabble in paint palettes inspired by the soul of Ghana’s streets. Hand-printed on 100% Soft Cotton using the local Batik tradition our bold prints transform lengths of local and up-cycled cotton into exclusive dresses.

The brand has made its way from high street to e-commerce with Asos.com/ stocked in Asos’ Eco outlet ‘The Greenroom’ and most recently has been been bought by concept boutiques such as Opening Ceremony/Tokyo, Japan – http://www.openingceremonyjapan.com/about/index.html, Beklina/US/online – www.beklina.com and a few boutiques in Europe in The Netherlands and Portugal.

The next Spring Summer range is to hit Asos Middle end of May and has already been received by all of our boutiques. Most of them are holding it for release in May/June for warmer weather. Visit http://www.choolips.com/ for more info.

We look forward to her new collection coming out and hopefully working together soon!
