We love this shoot for the June issue of GQ by the photographer Neil Gavin. He spent some time earlier this year travelling around the UK photographing the young new stars of English football for an 8 page story. They include Liverpool’s Andy Carroll, Everton’s Jack Rodwell, Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson, Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere and Manchester United’s Chris Smalling. We HAD to know more about the shoot so we talked to him and got some behind the scenes info. You can see more of his amazing images on www.neilgavin.com

How did the shoot come about?

I was commissioned by GQ’s art director Warren Jackson who I’ve worked with on many shoots in the past….

How was it shooting with the Football players?

It was really interesting. Myself and stylist Grace Gilfeather spent some time travelling around the UK. It took a lot of organising by GQ’s Health & Sports editor Paul Henderson to work out shooting schedules around the players training and other commitments. I was so glad to have been available to shoot them all. I had to work fast and find suitable locations and figure out the right lighting as we were so restricted with time….

Which shoot was your favourite and why?

I enjoyed meeting and shooting the most expensive English player ever Andy Carroll soon after he moved to Liverpool. We had travelled to Newcastle to photograph him on transfer day only to return to London empty handed. I also realised how respected Jack Wilshere is when I came to shoot him on the roof of Vogue House there was a posse Arsenal fans who work at Conde Nast waiting to meet him. Even one of the security porters came into work on his day off to meet him….

Thanks to Neil.
